Bauhinia guianensis

(Bejuco de cadena, Liana, Judas, Jumuu)

Bejuco, is an originated word from the Caribs.


Occurrence

Common in Venezuela along the Caribbean coast, Caribbean Antilles and Amazon rainforest.


Nutritional use

Young shoots are used as a vegetable and green fodder for animals.


Medicinal uses

It is antibacterial, cures respiratory affections as well as digestive issues. Helps cicatrizes wounds, treat acne antiviral and anti-carcinogenic. Used to combat diabetes, and stomach problems. Helps in hair growth and health.

Optimizes the immune system as well as aids in the absorption of nutrients.


Parts of the plant that are mostly used: Root, leaves, and seed.

A strong decoction of the root with 3 spoonfuls of honey is given in case of dysentery. The root is also purgative.

It is said that this species is more effective against venereal diseases. The shoots cut into pieces are put into cold water and the infusion is taken 3 times a day; it is said that any symptom of the sickness disappears within 9 to 14 days. Vapors of a decoction are used against rheumatism.

The leaves are used as ingredients for a ritual bath by the Caribs.

The seeds may be used as a laxative.
